Kindness

The gift that keeps on giving.

In 1993 Professor Chuck Wall of Bakersfield College gave his class a simple assignment. Each of his 18 students ranging in age from 18 to 67 were told to “commit one act of senseless kindness.” The assignment so engaged his students that they started their own campaign, printing up and selling bumper stickers. The county sheriff ordered 150 for his squad cars. Then the entire community got behind the effort and the campaign became a movement spreading all the way to the Oprah Winfrey show. As a way of thanking the professor for his inspiration the students donated their proceeds to the Kern County Braille Center. Chuck Wall is blind.

Kindness and the connection it creates, even between strangers, is one of the most powerful expressions of selfless love. When we give the gift of kindness we may never know its full impact, but one thing is certain, for that moment, the world is a better place.

To bring more kindness into your life, consciously look for opportunities to offer a helping hand, a friendly smile, a sincere compliment or a word of encouragement. Kindness has a way of taking on a life of its own, spreading from one person to another. And whether your kindness is acknowledged at the moment or not, you can be sure it will be rewarded. Doing good feels good. And the kindness you offer today may be the kindness you receive just when you need it most.
